First paper published!

The MMD lab has just published its first paper. “Mechanoactivation of Spiropyran Covalently Linked PMMA: Effect of Temperature, Strain Rate, and Deformation Mode” is currently available online in the ASAP portion of Macromolecules (http://pubs.acs.org/doi/full/10.1021/ma502555d). This experimental work led by postdoctoral associate Jae Woo Kim advances understanding of how mechanophores respond to externally applied stress when […]

Taisu Kumar joins the MMD lab

Welcome to new MMD lab member Taisu Kumar. Taisu will be doing the project portion of his Mechanical Engineering MEng degree synthesizing and characterizing mechanochromic polymers. As you can see, he is already at work doing science.

Open Positions

The MMD lab is looking for currently enrolled Cornell MEng or undergraduate students interested in working for credit Spring 2015 and then for pay over the summer assuming sufficient progress. Available projects are at the intersection of mechanics with either materials science or biology. Please contact Prof Silberstein (ms2682@cornell.edu) with a CV or resume.

Congrats to Meenakshi Sundaram!

Congratulations to Meenakshi Sundaram for passing his A-exam yesterday!

Welcome to Francisco Candido!

First year MAE graduate student Francisco Candido has officially joined the MMD lab! Francisco earned his undergraduate degree at San Diego State and has already received an NSF Graduate Research fellowship and a Cornell Sloan Fellowship. Francisco will begin his PhD research working on composites in collaboration with the Shepherd group.

Jesse Kidd Presents at SERMACS

Former MMD lab REU student Jesse Kidd presented a poster at the recent Southeastern Regional Meeting of the American Chemical Society. His poster covered his synthesis and mechanical testing of spiropyran-linked PDMS that he performed working with Jaewoo Kim this summer.

New.MECH 2014

This past weekend half the MMD lab drove out to western Massachusetts for the 1 day annual mechanics conference New.MECH hosted this year by UMass Amherst. Graduate student Naigeng Chen presented his experimental work on non-wovens.

Welcome to Simge Uzun!

Fiber sciences masters student Simge Uzun will be a joint member of the MMD lab and the Hinestroza Textiles Nanotechnology Lab. Her masters thesis will focus on the production and characterization of nonwovens.

Welcome to Suwon Bae

Second year MAE graduate student Suwon Bae has officially joined the MMD lab. He will be working on characterizing and modeling the mechanics of nanoparticle-based materials.

USNCTAM 2014

The MMD lab went to the winter Olympics of mechanics conferences last week – The United States National Congress on Theoretical & Applied Mechanics held in Lansing, MI. Held every four years in a different US city, this conference brings together theory oriented mechanicians from both the solids and fluids communities. Graduate students Meenakshi Sundaram […]
