Solid or liquid?
On March 3rd, 2023, Postdoc Rob Wagner and Ph.D. candidate Zhongtong Wang, in conjunction with the Cornell Center for Materials Research, attended Dryden Elementary School to teach 3rd-grade students about the phases of matter, and viscoelastic materials. In this interactive lesson designed by Rob, Rob and Zhongtong used hands-on demonstrations spanning from rubber bands and maple […]
MATERIAL DESIGN BY ADDITIVE MANUFACTURING
Join Cornell University April 29th 10am-4pm for this year’s KK Wang Industry Day on materials design by additive manufacturing – a virtual symposium that merges industry and academia. The program will feature keynote talks, presentations from academic and industrial leaders, and a poster competition. Prof Silberstein will be talking about the MMD lab work on […]
NY State Fair 2019
The MMD lab spent a very rainy Wednesday in the 4-H Youth Building at the NY State Fair encouraging the next generation of polymer mechanics enthusiasts. As always, our silly putty making was a hit. (Note: This animal did not participate in the making of silly putty.)
4-H Career Explorations
We hosted our annual 4-H Career Explorations University-U activity the last week of June. This year graduate student Michael Buche took the helm and increased the interactive components. Joy and Yuval assisted Michael with facilitating the discussions, design, and testing.
The NY State Fair
The MMD lab made its annual sojourn to the NY State Fair this weekend to host a booth in the 4-H Youth Building. We got to share our enthusiasm for polymers and mechanochemistry with the myriad of people spending their Labor Day at the fair. Joy used her materials science expertise to take our silly […]
4-H Career Explorations
Graduate students Michael and Steven revised and ran our University U activity at the 4-H Career Explorations event last month. This year we added a design challenge – after testing individual materials, students tried to make an assembly that gave a J-shaped force-deflection curve under tension. We tested their designs on our Zwick Universal Testing […]
PBS Nova -Treasures of the Earth
Our morphing metal work from last spring was highlighted in a recent PBS Nova Documentary: “Treasured of the Earth: Metals“. Check out Professors Shepherd and Silberstein and graduate student Ilse Van Meerbeek in the future of metals segment. Available on youtube here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AAboGHdIykA.
Silberstein Lab Participates in Expanding Your Horizons 2014
The Cornell Center for Materials Research hosted its annual Expanding Your Horizons day this past Saturday – a STEM conference for 7th-9th grade girls. Prof Silberstein and postdoc collaborator Margaret Koker participated as “buddies” accompanying two of the girls to their workshops. Graduate student Naigeng Chen gave a tour of the MMD lab and demonstrated […]
GIAC Outreach
The Mechanics for Material Design lab took a trip last week to the Greater Ithaca Activities Center to do materials science activities with a kindergarten and first grade after school program.
