Cornell High Energy Synchrotron Source Annual Users Meeting 2014

CHESS’s annual users meeting is taking place this week. Yesterday graduate student Naigeng Chen showed off his x-ray diffraction and computed tomography experiments at the poster session. Prof Silberstein was elected as one of the three incoming members of the user executive committee.

Society for Experimental Mechanics 2014

Prof Silberstein just returned from the annual Society for Experimental Mechanics Conference and Exposition in Greenville, SC. Her talk entitled “Nonwoven Mechanics: Microstructure-based Modeling and Validation” included the experimental work of MMD lab graduate student Naigeng Chen and CHESS postdoctoral fellow Margaret Koker. Prof Silberstein was also elected secretary of the Time Dependent Materials technical […]

Poster Session

Undegraduate Jipeng Qi presented at the Spring 2014 Undergraduate Research Poster Session on April 24th. The poster covered his fall and summer research on polymer molecular dynamics.

Silberstein Lab Participates in Expanding Your Horizons 2014

The Cornell Center for Materials Research hosted its annual Expanding Your Horizons day this past Saturday – a STEM conference for 7th-9th grade girls. Prof Silberstein and postdoc collaborator Margaret Koker participated as “buddies” accompanying two of the girls to their workshops. Graduate student Naigeng Chen gave a tour of the MMD lab and demonstrated […]

South Dakota School of Mines and Technology Invited Talk

Professor Silberstein visited the Mechanical Engineering department at the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology this past week. SMSMT is the top engineering school in South Dakota and has strong industrial ties. Prof Silberstein’s talk entitled “The Cornell Synchrotron and Nonwoven Mechanics” introduced how x-rays can be used to study materials and then highlighted […]

GIAC Outreach

The Mechanics for Material Design lab took a trip last week to the Greater Ithaca Activities Center to do materials science activities with a kindergarten and first grade after school program.

Sibley Graduate Research Symposium

Meenakshi helps organize a successful first ever Sibley Graduate Research Symposium. Congratulations to Naigeng for winning the Francis C. Moon Best Poster Award at SGRS!

Synchrotron Success!

Graduate student Naigeng Chen successfully completes (survives) a second round of Cornell synchrotron time. Check out those x-ray scattering peaks!

USNCTAM acceptance

Graduate students Naigeng Chen and Meenakshi Sundaram Manivannan accepted to speak at the 17th U.S. National Congress on Theoretical & Applied Mechanics.

Haythornthwaite Grant

Meredith Silberstein has been awarded a 2013 Haythornthwaite Research Initiation Grant by the ASME Applied Mechanics Division. The purpose of this grant is to fund equipment and travel for new tenure track faculty engaged in research in theoretical and applied mechanics.
